A weekend of French flair in Franschhoek

The Food & Wine Marquee is where most of the food and wine action happens during the annual DStv Franschhoek Bastille Festival in Franschhoek. With over 20 of Franschhoek's wineries and almost as many local food stands, the festival promises to excite wine buffs and foodies alike!

The Food & Wine Marquee is located next to the Franschhoek Huguenot Monument at the top of Franschhoek's Main Road. Beautiful snow-capped mountains were visible from the tent this past weekend.

Every festival-goer gets five tasting coupons to use and a R20 off voucher to redeem on a wine purchase at the festival. Most wineries offer a variety of wines and it can certainly be hard to choose your favourites.

Local restaurants in Franschhoek offered delicious gourmet fare and sweet treats during the weekend.

On Saturday the wineries battled it out in the annual Barrel Rolling Competition sponsored by Porcupine Ridge Wines. The Franschhoek Wine Valley team walked away as the winners this year with La Bri in the runner-up position!

Dressing up in French colours and sporting your fake moustache are both encouraged during the Bastille Festival weekend. It is indeed the only time of the year that you will be forgiven for wearing a beret, especially if it is red and makes you look like an EFF supporter! It is great fun and festival-goers certainly go all out with dressing up for the festival.

During the Franschhoek Bastille Festival weekend the entire town of Franschhoek joins in by celebrating. Main Street restaurants offer live music and special menus for the weekend and the Franschhoek Village Market offers something extra for festival-goers.
